Term 3 Homework Expectations

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope you all received the Tirohanga Newsletter that was handed out last week. If not please see the 'class newsletters' tab.
A homework expectations notice was handed out today outlining the expectations for this term.

Mathletics  (click to go to the Mathletics site)

Ten Mathletics activities are set on a Monday for the week. Some time is given during school time to complete these activities as well as an expectation of completing the rest of these at home.
*Some students ask for more activities set during the week as they are motivated to increase their score to gain certificates and points and prefer activities rather than 'live mathletics'.

Reading
It is expected your child will read their reader each night, however I understand there are after school activities that some children participate in. Your child keeps their readers in their book bag for the week to allow for any ‘catch up’ reading on evenings that are a little less busy.
*Sunshine Classics is also an option for students wanting more books to read.

STEPS

STEPS homework has now been set and username and passwords issued. All students have had a go at logging themselves in and how to get in to the homework section. This will be updated weekly. You can see the due date of the activities when you click on Homework.
The site is stepsweb.com or just click on STEPS above. It can only be used in Google Chrome or Apple Safari.

Usernames and Passwords have been sent home on the notice. Please keep this safe to refer back to.
If you do misplace the notice or forget passwords please email me  buchananc@glenbrook.school.nz

If you do not have internet/device access at home or are having trouble with any of this please see me.
I can't wait to see everyone logging in and having a go at the activities!

Learning in Tirohanga in the past week or 2...

Apologies for the lack of posts recently. Tirohanga have been working super hard as usual, so here is a BIG post of all the things we have been doing.
Be prepared to see AMAZING learners...

FMS with Coach Manu. We have learnt the steps to balance successfully and are now learning how to do an overarm throw.

Maths - lots of awesome skip counters in Tirohanga. Learning to skip count to help us solve multiplication problems.

Reading - William and the Pukeko group read "You Can Make a Happy Cake". William and his Mum made the happy cake at home and shared it with the class. Thanks William!

Uenuku Opening - We were lucky enough to spend some time in the new Uenuku building on Thursday. We paired up with an Uenuku class member who showed us around their awesome new learning space. Lots of us are hoping to be in there next year!

During our learning we think it is also good to enjoy having a good laugh. Mr. Kees had a great laugh so much that he was rolling on the floor, crying happy tears! (That's our new favourite saying).

For our Inquiry Topic - Native Birds - we have decided to construct bird houses. We are doing this in pairs that we have chosen ourselves. Here we are making a plan for our houses. Included in our plan is a picture of our intended house, what we will need to make it and how we are going to attract birds to it. There was some fantastic Whakawhanaungatanga happening during this!

On Friday's we usually have a treat of playing Kahoot - a quiz that Miss Buchanan makes online. We all have a device to use and log in to the site. We answer the questions using our device and can see our points at the end!

Zoo Trip

Wow what an amazing day we have had at the Zoo!!
Thank you to all of the awesome parents that came along, we couldn't have done it without you.
If you have any photos from the zoo please send them to buchananc@glenbrook.school.nz (Miss Buchanan) or ask me for a USB stick to put them on. I am going to put up a photo display wall in class and add some to the blog to.
Another fantastic day of learning - you rock Tirohanga!!

Reading

This week Miss Claire, a student teacher from Te Ra came to take the Kiwi reading group. We had lots of fun and learnt about different blends that can help us figure out a tricky word when we are reading.
See you next week Miss Claire!

Inflatable Football

This week we were lucky enough to have special visitors from Football NZ to teach us some soccer skills. We had a few games at the end in an inflatable soccer field! We were so excited all week about this. Well done to Max and Niamh for being recognised as trying their best the whole time and recieving medals!
Your child would have recieved a notice about the option of participating in this on Monday lunchtimes for 6 weeks starting Monday 9th May. More information can be found on the flyer on the classroom window.
